Job Description

The City of Rochester (pop. 112,225) is seeking a Police Chief. Rochester is the third largest city in Minnesota, with projected growth topping 160,000 within the next 20 years. The Police Chief reports to the Mayor, receives work direction from the City Administrator and is responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall direction for public safety, building partnerships across all segments of the community, and directing preparation and administration of the department’s annual operating and capital budgets. The department is made up of 139 sworn officers, 68 civilian staff, and has a 2018 budget of $30.3 million.
The pay range is $128,697 – $183,854. In compliance with the Minnesota statutory salary cap, compensation paid above $171,338 occurs in the form of deferred pay which is received when the employee leaves employment. The City also offers competitive benefits, participation in PERA P&F pension plan and a relocation package.

Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in police administration, criminal justice or related field and six years of progressively responsible police administration experience with five years in a command capacity. Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Minnesota Peace Officer.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with a department of similar size, established record of community engagement and experience building a diverse department team are a plus.
